Larry Udell: Decoy carver

Photo: Larry UdellLarry Udell is retired from the lumber industry and he is also a retired waterfowl guide. He took friends hunting for pleasure. Although commercial duck hunting was outlawed in 1917, guides continue to take recreational hunters to the various marsh islands of the south shore. Like other duck hunters, Larry’s grandfather made his own decoys of cork or wood.

Larry has continued this tradition, making wood decoys of mergansers, broadbills, widgeons and other local species. He has also made decoy rigs, duck boats and floating blinds to hunt with. Larry puts several birds in competition each year at several shows and is a winner of many ribbons and awards. Larry, who sometimes carves decoys on demand, can be reached at decoy70@aol.com.
