Please join us at the East Meadow Public Library on February 13, 2022, at 2 pm, for a very special program — Recognizing Diversity: A Personal Struggle.

The struggle for recognition by women of color is part of the broader civil rights movement on Long Island. In this program join us for an exploration of how traditional women artists and performers have guided the movement for decades, from different perspectives.

Joining this program will be:

  • African American fiber artist and activist Joan Hodges of Hempstead;
  • Denise Silva Dennis, a member of the Shinnecock nation and accomplished artist and activist; and,
  • Adriana Devers, a Dominican poet, writer and storyteller and author of “Mi Chiquitica en Luna Llena” My Little One in Full Moon,  ¡Todos a bailar! (2020) A celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Dominican Republic’s merengue, and other works.

The program will be moderated by folklorist and Long Island Traditions’ Executive Director Nancy Solomon. Admission is free; registration is required. Register online here, or call 794-2570 ext. 5005 to register. The library requests that masks be worn in the community room.
