Celebrating Long Island's Cultural Heritage Through Arts and Education

Our program areas include singing, dance, and storytelling as well as costume and craft; educating and preserving architectural sites that tell the story of the people who build and maintain them; culturally responsive school programs in partnership with teaching artists; and grants to individual artists who are building on ancestral knowledge to create new work about life in their unique place and time.

• Bring 4 Indigenous artists from Long Island nations into classrooms to share their life, art & culture
• Partner with Local Learning to train 8 Long Island cultural artists to expand their teaching repertoire
• Partner with the Long Island Children’s Museum to bring maritime artists, baymen & boat builders to the opening of their Saltwater Stories exhibit

From baymen sharing their lived experience to cultural artists teaching music, dance, storytelling & crafts, our youth gain a firsthand appreciation for heritage, identity & community. 🌟

🌿 We were glad to create a new Native Studies Program with The Wheatley School, in collaboration with artist Jeremy Dennis, to explore and celebrate Indigenous heritage right here on Long Island.

Together, we launched a meaningful program highlighting the voices and creativity of Indigenous communities of Long Island, giving students and the public a chance to connect with the region’s rich cultural traditions.

Long Island has long been home to the Shinnecock, Matinecock, Montaukett, and Unkechaug peoples, among other Indigenous nations — whose stories, art, and histories continue to shape our region today.

We’re now looking forward to next month’s artist workshop, which will feature members of Indigenous communities from across Long Island, continuing this important dialogue through art and storytelling. Stay Tuned✨

Native American Day is a time to honor and celebrate the Native Americans, who are believed to be the first people to live in what is now the United States. Before European settlers arrived, they lived across the continent, from the Pacific to the Atlantic and from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. They have played—and continue to play—a vital role in shaping the country’s story.

The holiday was first proclaimed in South Dakota in 1990 as part of a reconciliation effort, replacing Columbus Day, and later became an official state holiday in 1998. On this day, people learn about the diverse tribes, their cultures, and the adversities they faced, including colonization and genocide.

More than just remembrance, Native American Day is a celebration of resilience, heritage, and knowledge. 🌊🦀 We had a great time at Port Jefferson’s Family Day! Long Island Traditions was proud to host a table alongside local baymen—cousins Tom Jeffries and John Remsen from Freeport—who shared their knowledge and love for the bay through our hands-on touch tank exhibit. 🐚✨

This special exhibit was made possible thanks to donations collected by the Friends of the Port Jefferson Free Library in memory of their beloved former coworker, Brian Mori. We’re honored to help keep his memory alive through this meaningful experience for the community.

We set sail on a beautiful ☀️ sunny day to Oyster Bay with three baymen, including Bill Fetzer (as seen in the video!) who’s been clamming since he was 21. He shared his tricks of the trade, and gave us a close look at eel traps, fish traps, and lets us try our hand at digging for clams on the bay floor. Senior students from Wheatley High School got to step out of the classroom and into the heart of Long Island’s maritime lifestyle. Rosa Reyes welcomed us with open arms into her family home, instantly making us feel like part of the family. We sat down across from her father, Luis Cordero, a warm presence whose legacy looms large in the cozy, music-filled space. As we settled in, the comfort of their home mirrored the openness with which Rosa began to share her story. In this snippet, she reflects on what it was like growing up with a father who is a singer-songwriter and who recorded countless albums right there in their basement. She describes how being surrounded by music, creativity, and a bit of beautiful chaos helped shape her identity—not just as an artist, but as a person. In a region often spotlighted for its luxury and leisure, the Hamptons Civil Rights Back Story Cell Phone Tour—available on the TravelStorys app—reveals a powerful, often overlooked narrative of Black history and civil rights. This immersive digital experience was brought to life through a meaningful partnership between Dr. Georgette Grier-Key of the Eastville Community Historical Society and folklorist Nancy Solomon of Long Island Traditions. Together, they combined deep historical knowledge with a commitment to preserving the lived experiences of local Black residents, creating a tour that bridges past and present through authentic community voices.

Through Solomon’s guidance, the project ensured that the voices of longtime residents—often passed over in traditional historical accounts—were recorded, honored, and made accessible to a wider audience. The collaboration emphasized that civil rights history is not only national but deeply local, interwoven into the fabric of everyday places many pass by without knowing their significance. Last week, Long Island Traditions, in partnership with the Freeport School District, welcomed 120 fourth-grade students from Leo F. Giblyn Elementary School for a special cultural experience.

The students had the opportunity to learn from local baymen and Shinnecock wampum carvers Josephine Smith and Shelley Moore, gaining insight into the maritime traditions of both the baymen and our Indigenous artists.

Both students and teachers were deeply engaged and enthusiastic about this unique learning opportunity.

Our annual maritime workshop with the Wheatley School’s 12th grade Long Island history class. With baymen Chris Hale, George Rigby, Tom Jeffries, Bill Fetzer and Craig Oddo, who demonstrated model boat building, duck decoy carving, and commercial fishing equipment with live bait animals.

This year Josephine Smith joined us to talk about Indigenous Shinnecock whaling, wampum shell carving, and Mishoon dugout boat building techniques, and Danielle shared the work of the Shinnecock Kelp Farming initiative.

“Long Island Back Story” explores Long Island’s South Shore maritime culture including bay houses.
“East End Backstory” explores the maritime culture of the East End including the Combs Decoy Shop at Hallockville.
North Shore Back Story Tour explores the maritime culture of sites from Port Washington to Port Jefferson, including the Port Washington Water Taxi and West Meadow Beach.
The Long Island Diversity Tour explores Long Island’s cultural diversity, from Hempstead to the Shinnecock Reservation.
The Hamptons Civil Rights Back Story Tour explores the struggle for equal rights by African American residents, from Southampton to East Hampton.
The Nassau County Civil Rights Back Story Tour explores the struggle for equal rights in Roslyn, Roosevelt, Hempstead and Malverne/Lakeview.
