Danger on the Water

Throughout history there have been tragedies on the ocean and the bay. While many of these have been recorded in history manuscripts, songs, poems and literature, there are also the stories of survivors and family members who recall the deceased. While most fishermen die at home of old age, others die in storms, hurricanes and accidents. The stories are told by parents to youngsters who see working on the bay as a glamorous occupation; so that they learn that the water can be treacherous, even in shallow waters. The stories also serve as memorials to those who have died or perished. The film and book “The Perfect Storm” is a reminder to fishermen and landlubbers alike that the sea is both a place to fear and to respect.
