Arts in Education
Long Island Traditions sponsors various arts-in-education programs that are supported by the NY State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The goals of these programs are to bring traditional artists into classrooms where students can enhance their understanding of history and traditions through in-class presentations and residencies, along with hands-on activities and field trips. Remote and in class programs are available.
Our programs rely on recognized master artists who have undergone extensive training in working with school-age children, grades 4 and higher. Long Island Traditions works closely with school curriculum specialists and teachers in developing appropriate curriculum materials and designing activities that make each program exciting and engaging to the students and teachers alike. Programs can focus on a traditional occupation, family and community traditions, and educating teachers on folklife resources in the community. We encourage interview based projects where students will interview a master traditional artist as well as conduct primary research on the artist’s background and traditions.
Based on our ongoing fieldwork in the maritime and various ethnic communities of Long Island, and documenting traditional architecture, we offer 3 distinct programs that are available to all schools at the appropriate grade level:
